Kittie Yiyi was born to stand out. With her quirky fashion style and bubbly personality, she
definitely makes heads turn.
If you follow her on social media, you would know that she is a work hard, play hard kinda
girl. This petite woman made her fashion debut in 2014 at KL Fashion Week and has never
turned back since. A true definition of a #girlboss, she hustles through to do the best at what
she does. Her designs are an amazing representation of her as an individual, with bold and
playful combinations of materials, colours and prints.
Because of all that she is, we took the excuse of celebrating all things Girl Power to get to
know a bit more about her and how she does it all.
Follow KittieYiyi’s updates on her blog; her fashion line, KittieYiyi Collection; as well as on
her Instagram to stay updated with all her incredible creations!
1. HEY, KITTIE! TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a Fashion Designer and online content creator. I’m shy at first, but outgoing after we
get to know each other. *giggles*
2. HAVE YOU ALWAYS KNOWN YOU WANTED TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER SINCE YOU
Yes. One of the most memorable things I did was when I cut my room curtain to make my
Barbie doll a dress. I was only 6 years old at the time and I never stopped chasing my
dream afterwards. It wasn’t easy, but what dreams are ever made easy?
3. WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST TO VENTURE INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
I remember there was this one time I watched a runway show on TV. Seeing all the beauty
of it, it made me realise that I really wanted to make pretty clothes that appear on stage.
4. SEEING AS FASHION IS OFTEN NOT ENCOURAGED AS A CAREER PATH IN MALAYSIA, WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST STRUGGLES YOU FACED ALONG THE WAY?
The biggest struggle is to get people to support my unique style. If you have seen my collections, they are often loud and quirky, something you won’t usually see or be able
to get off a shelf in any of the retail stores in Malaysia. To be honest, I really wish that
Malaysians are more expressive and open when it comes to dressing themselves.
5. WHERE DO YOU OFTEN FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS?
Everywhere. It can be found anywhere and at any time. Sometimes I get inspiration even
when I bathe, and sometimes I get them through my dreams.
6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN PURSUING A
CAREER IN FASHION?
The best advice is to take the journey in pursuing it one step at a time. It is so important to keep the passion burning until you get there.
7. WE HAVE BEEN LOVING ALL YOUR COLLECTIONS, NOT TO MENTION THE VERY
RECENT SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION AS WELL AS THE RECENT SUPERCREW
COLLABORATION. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM KITTIE YIYI COLLECTION IN 2018?
It will be more ready-to-wear and affordable. Do keep a lookout! ;)
