Simple Chores You Should Not Skip On The Weekend To Ensure Your Rest Of The Week Goes Smoothly

by Yee Yi Ling |

The term ‘chores’ seems to carry with it a little weight doesn’t it? It sounds tedious and feels like a burden. Yet, if we allow chores to continuously slip past us, we will soon find ourselves knee-deep, overwhelmed, and paralysed, not knowing where to start.

Here, I have devised a step-by-step system that makes doing chores much less daunting.

This system will save you the mental effort of deciding when to start, what to do, how to do it, and even maybe the why of convincing yourself to do it. All you need to do is commit yourself to try, follow the system, and just do it!

1. Do your laundry

It takes 3 minutes to move your laundry from the clothes hamper to the washing machine. 3 minutes, to ensure you don’t end up with no underwear in the middle of the week. While your laundry is running, continue with the other tasks below!

2. Wash your water bottle thoroughly

We’ve all been there – where the mouth of our bottle starts to smell funky, and green gunk starts growing at the bottom.

The 2 minutes it takes for you to soap and sponge your bottle, eliminates dozens of episodes throughout the week whereby you’re bothered by a mouldy bottle. That’s one less thing that occupies unnecessary mental space so that you can spend more energy investing in things that truly matter.

Your body is composed of 70% of water, so adequate rehydration from a clean bottle helps your body perform at its best!

3. Plug in all your electronics

Ensure all your electronics – power banks, phones, laptops, smartwatch, wireless earphones, etc, are all sufficiently charged. We wouldn’t want to be driving somewhere new, relying on Waze, only to have your phone battery go flat with no backup, now would we?

4. 10-minute speed clean

Next step. Over the week, our belongings tend to develop the ability to travel across the house, ending up in odd ends and places. If you have children, you know this is especially true.

This 10-minute speed clean is a simple and quick exercise to get your house back into shape.

How To: Set a timer for 10 minutes. Put down your phone. Take a walk around your entire house, picking up anything that is currently not where they belong - clothes on the sofa, used cups on the coffee table, rubber bands lying around - and put them back where they belong. If you stay in a multiple storey house, carry a basket with you. Anything you find that belongs on another floor goes in the basket. Simply put them where they belong when you’re on the right floor.

If you have extra time before the 10 minutes is up, take a wet cloth and wipe down all your surfaces. You’d be surprised how effective this little trick is.

Pro Tip: If you have children, this is a fun activity to involve them in as well!

5. 5-minute de-bugging

Done with the speed clean? Now, go around the house once more, this time, finding things that have been bugging you, but never got around to dealing with. A fused light bulb, a cupboard with plastic containers falling out every time you open it, a button that came loose off your favourite blouse, or a smoke alarm that beeps occasionally, indicating the need for a battery change. Identify these bugs and take 5 minutes to fix them immediately.

6. 10-minute paper ruffling

We all have that stack of papers consisting of unopened mails, miscellaneous papers, and unsettled bills sitting on a table somewhere. Throughout the week, our cortisol levels spike a little every time we glance at the stack.

Set another timer for 10 minutes and tackle as many papers as you can. Open envelopes, draft replies, pay the bills, get it out of the way, and discard anything irrelevant. Setting a timer of 10 minutes lets you know that there is a specific end time, making it easier to sit down and get started.

If you don’t have a physical pile of papers, you might have something similar in the form of an overloaded email inbox. Go through those instead.

7. Floors, floors, floors

10 minutes is up! That wasn’t too bad, was it?

Now, whilst I can disregard mopping the floors, I strongly believe we need to prevent dust from turning into a thick layer of fog. We all know that at the end of the week, there will be one too many strands of hair, dust balls, dead skin, and biscuit crumbs on the floor.

Take the time to sweep your floors now! If you are not a big fan of sweeping (like me), invest in a vacuum cleaner (a decent one costs as low as RM90). Clean your floors effortlessly, more effectively, in half the time.

8. 3-minute fridge clean

Our laundry is almost done, but in the meantime, let’s head over to the kitchen. Take 3 minutes to go through your fridge, clear out anything along the lines of wilted slimy vegetables, curdled milk, and mouldy leftover rice. This will save you the hassle of realizing midweek, that you have a bad odour in your fridge, and having to use what little energy you have left to clean it out.

9. Hang Your Laundry

Woah is that the washing machine beeping already? That was fast. Look at everything we’ve accomplished in the past hour! Now, hang your laundry out to dry, the sunnier the better, and bask in the satisfaction of all the chores you’ve managed today.

Additional tip: We all know successful entrepreneurs who wear the same thing every day, to save their brainpower for more productive endeavours. While that mantra may not be for all of us, we can still take advantage of planning our outfits for the week, all at once. Once your laundry is dry, pair your tops and bottoms on the same hanger, and hang them up in your closet chronologically.

That’s it! A go-to system that helps you organize your house in no time, even on a week where you’ve been overworked and feeling overwhelmed. Doing housework doesn’t have to feel like a chore, treat them like necessities to allow you to live a productive, fulfilling life. Who would be able to perform at their best if they have no clean clothes to wear and can’t find their belongings half the time?

Modify this and create your own chores system that works best for you, treat it like a little game and see how much you can get done in an hour or two! Of course, don’t forget to occasionally scrub your bathroom sink as you’re brushing your teeth 😉
