Daily Affirmations to Kickstart Your Mornings on A Positive Note

Some mornings, you wake up feeling refreshed, the sunshine is coming in through your window, and it seems like there’s nothing in the world you can’t do. Ideally this would be every morning, but a lot of the time the reality is that you would really rather go back to sleep than face the thought of getting out of bed.

On those days, we could use a little hit of positivity to set the tone for the rest of the day. So before you hit snooze again, try using these simple affirmations to get yourself in the right frame of mind for the day ahead!

1. Smile and remind yourself that today is going to be good no matter what.

Even though a smile may be the last thing on your mind when your alarm is steadily increasing in volume, the simple act of mustering a smile can shift your mood entirely. Science has shown that the mere act of smiling triggers a powerful chemical reaction in your brain, which results in a brighter mood, reduced stress levels, and even a boost in immunity. So switch off that alarm and greet the new day with a smile!

2. Thank yourself.

Take a moment to simply be grateful for the fact that you are alive and still here to experience another day. Think about it -- the fact that your heart and lungs and brain and all the 37.2 trillion cells in your body are still doing their utmost to keep you going is enough to make you go, “Wow, I’m alive.” Give thanks to your body for its dedication to looking after you. Be grateful for your loved ones, and the fact that their 37.2 trillion cells are still working hard to keep them here, with you. Continue becoming aware of things you are grateful for, no matter how small -- the bed you have just woken up in, the hot shower that awaits you, the opportunity to make the day ahead of you into whatever you want it to be.

By just creating that feeling of gratitude and carrying it with you throughout the day makes a world of difference to your inner state and the influence you bring to your environment.

3. Count for 5 seconds and DO IT.

If you still don’t feel motivated to haul yourself out of bed and into the first task of the day, you can always turn to Mel Robbins’ famous 5 Second Rule:

“If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it.”

This applies to anything you do, throughout the day, but you can apply it within moments of waking up to set the tone for a productive 24 hours. The moment you think, “I should get out of bed,” and your brain starts to go, “Can la, five more minutes…” -- act quick! Count backwards from 5, then just do it -- sit up, throw off your covers, and get out of bed. Done!

Need to finish up that proposal by end of today but you’re too tired? Count for 5 seconds and just do it. Stick to doing it for 5-15 minutes and you’ll realise that your “mojo” to get it will come through.

4. "Make it fun!"

When we were kids, every day was definitely fun. Now that we’re older, it’s easy to fall into the trap of dreading the mountain of work, chores, traffic jams and responsibilities the daily routine brings.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “That seems unrealistic”. This is just a reminder to yourself to take everything with a pinch of salt. Your boss is being unusually cranky at you recently? Always getting stuck in a jam? Instead of dreading what can’t be undone - you could change your perception to make those things feel like less of a drag and find even the littlest joys in life and simply to make if “fun” for yourself.

Start playing little games with yourself to make the mundane more fun; allow the imagination of your younger self to come out to play again. Whatever you can come up with to put a childlike twist like creating a fun, new Spotify playlist for yourself to brace through the deadly traffic or get a new set of speakers for your car that you’ve been wanting to get. Who knows, you may even start to actually enjoy doing the boring stuff more!

5. Visualise your highest self. Start showing up as her/him.

This is one of my favourite pieces of advice and one that I repeat to myself throughout the day. I know it’ll take a lot of work to get from where I am to where I want to be, but I’ll never get there if I don’t put in the effort now. So every morning, take a moment to imagine what the best possible version of yourself would do -- then do it. Behave, think, act, speak and live as the person you want to be, starting right now. You may find that you’ve become that very person sooner than you think!

These affirmations may sound simple and even a little cliche, but they can be incredibly effective when put into practice. It’s all about the attitude and mindset they create, which you can then take with you throughout the day. Of course, these affirmations aren’t limited to just in the morning - if you find yourself caught in a rut, these affirmations could make you feel better and self-dependent.

No matter what time of day, take a moment to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that everything happens for a reason. Feel the shift -- the joy, peace, strength and power that comes with it. Smile a little, and be grateful for that feeling. Open your eyes and see the world in a new light.
