#CrunchTest Movie Review: The Secret Life of Pets 2

Curated by Meagan Tan. |

Disclaimer: There could be spoilers in this review.

Chances are, if you’re an animal lover or you’re obsessed with your fur babies, the first Secret Life of Pets (2016) would definitely not be unheard of to you. I could still remember when the trailer was released, almost everyone was sharing it - loved by kids and even a grown man who loves animation or all things cute! The first film had a great balance of sentimental touch tugging on your heart strings and comedy.

Comparing to the first movie, this sequel seem to have more sub-plots featuring the main character, Max (Patton Oswalt) coping with his owner's new kid, Snowball (Kevin Hart) showcasing his ‘superhero’ alter ego by helping Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) out on a heroic mission and Gidget (Jenny Slate), who is a lovable dog which 'transformed' into a... cat. Yep, we will not reveal any further to not spoil the movie for you!

All we can say is that there’s definitely a lot of humour in this movie that will not disappoint!

You can catch a glimpse of the sequel from the trailer here:

1. Did you watch the first movie? If yes, comparative with the first movie, which one has a better plot?

First! First movie had a deeper heartbreaking story & stronger moral values to learn. Although this sequel does have some values to share, the directors focused more on the humour in this one. Despite that, the sequel had many "aww" moments when we get to see how lovely can Liam can be when showcasing his strong bond with both Max and Duke.

2. Which is your favourite character and why?

Gidget! She's adorable, optimistic and had high-openness to do pretty much anything to get what she wants - which was to act like a cat despite being a dog all to get back Busybee, Max’s favourite toy! When in difficulty, she also sought help from her friends which was very empowering.

3. Despite being a family friendly movie, do you think this film would be equally enjoyable for all adults?

Yes! This movie felt like a total stress-reliever for me! The most entertaining scene was how Gidget became the "chosen one"! There were so many young adults in the cinema and I'm sure that they had a great laugh most of the time in the cinema especially for this scene.

4. What could the movie do better?

The movie could stick with one main moral value as there was quite a lot going on. It would be either about how Max turned out to be more tolerant towards Liam (his owner’s kid) or simply learning more about bravery and independence from the city life from Rooster, perhaps. Personally, for me, animated movies should display solid values that kids could learn and apply into their lives.

5. From 1-5, how much would you rate this movie?

I'll give a Good 4 for the good laugh that I had throughout the movie! But 2 for overall moral values learned. It's still an enjoyable movie overall.

1. Did you watch the first movie? If yes, comparative with the first movie, which one has a better plot?

When it comes to the plot, the first movie won my attention compared to the second. But, I stand by my words when I say, the plot of both films is overstuffed. I identified three distinct subplots that unfold in the second movie, and it was initially a little confusing to keep up with the flow, but eventually realised that there is a solid linking message between them; the courage to face your fears.

2. Which is your favourite character and why?

Without a doubt, Rooster! The alpha dog at the farm, voiced by the iconic Harrison Ford. I absolutely adored his mature embodiment of the father/teacher role in guiding Max and Duke; especially "Mr. Overprotective Max," to teach little Liam valuable lessons and prepare him to face the world.

3. Despite being a family friendly movie, do you think this film would be equally enjoyable for all adults?

Sadly, I don't think this movie will capture the attention and hearts of all adults as the storyline is entirely predictable and doesn't offer a brand new message. This movie has an array of adorable and hilarious characters played by an excellent voice cast such as Hart, Haddish, and Slate, who all delivered their lines on-point. Thankfully, there were a few unforgettable comedic scenes which saved the night and really tickled my funny bone!

4. What could the movie do better?

Having the premise itself inspired by the Tri-Star and M.C.E.G.'s "Look Who's Talking" Trilogy and Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story" series, the movie could at least do better in terms of the overall plot and ensure it's not crowded with chase sequences. Also, the main characters in each subplot should get equal screen time as I feel Snowball did outshine the rest in this movie.

5. From 1-5, how much would you rate this movie?

I would give the Secret Life of Pets 2, a fair 3 out of 5.

1. Did you watch the first movie? If yes, comparative with the first movie, which one has a better plot?

The sequel is definitely better! The first movie’s plot its kind of similar to Toy Story 1. But this sequel, each character has their own independent storylines and end they all connect and link together at the end which makes the movie more interesting. Plus, if you’re wondering - you’ll still be able to understand the sequel through & through even if you haven’t watched the first one.

2. Which is your favourite character and why?

Rooster is my favourite mainly because of his masculine characteristics. He’s just different from the others and it creates a ‘heroic’ kind of impact in the movie.

3. Despite being a family friendly movie, do you think this film would be equally enjoyable for all adults?

Adults who love animation will enjoy the sense of humour in this one. Moreover, the combination of kids and pets would be something that people normally can’t resist!

4. What could the movie do better?

I think it is good enough. The movie shows and transcribes the characteristics of what pets normally like to do in real life just like the first one but better. I just can’t stand the expressions and animations of each characters’ movements - just too cute and adorable!

5. From 1-5, how much would you rate this movie?

4.5 out of 5 - I would recommend it!
