#CrunchTest: 10 Malaysians Try This Locally Made Lipstick and Here's What They Have to Say

Updated: Jan 28, 2019

When it comes to beauty brands, you can bet your bottom Ringgit that just about every woman out there can name at least ten Western brands from Sephora alone. The same can be said about Korean beauty products. What about our local brands, though?

We say that during this Malaysia lovin’ month, we bring the spotlight to our own homegrown brands, starting with Kaay Cosmetics! Made from all-natural ingredients and free from alcohol, silicone, parabens and harmful chemicals, this is the perfect fit.

Ten Malaysian women put Kaay Cosmetics’ lipstick colours Berry Crush and Red Velvet to the test for your beauty needs. Unfiltered, uncensored, here is what they have to say:

The packaging could come with a mirror.

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

3.5/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Red Velvet.

3. Why do you like that colour?

It suits my skin colour as it is darker in shade - my lips appear fuller in this colour.

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

The texture. It was really smooth to apply and super light on my skin, and the smell is not strong, which is a plus point.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

The lipstick seems to be kind of sticky when the lips are touching- this is quite uncomfortable for me.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

I would recommend it because I like the colour range, and how smooth it is to apply. Plus, the packaging is light, making it easy to carry in handbags or pouches.

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

For me, I like this lipstick. I rate this product 4.5/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Between Berry Crush and Red Velvet, my favourite is Red Velvet.

3. Why do you like that colour?

I love red because it increases my confidence level and I feel like a boss when I wear it.

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

The product felt so light on and it was super easy to apply. It was also very easy to remove it.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

I think in terms of improvement, maybe the mint flavour in the product could be reduced because my lips felt cold and kinda numb while wearing it, but overall, everything is fine. The feeling kinda goes away after wearing it for about more than a minute.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

I will recommend this to my friends because the colour is very nice. I really love it 💕

Please brighten the colour.

Yes, I will. The price is cheaper than other matte lipsticks. And for Muslims, if we want to pray, we can easily clean it.

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

4/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Red Velvet.

3. Why do you like that colour?

It’s super vibrant and it enhances my skin tone.

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

I love the texture of Red Velvet. It is very different from the other red shades I have owned. Very pigmented and easy to remove as well at the end of the day.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

It needs to be a long-lasting lipstick. It can be easily removed for now.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

Yes, it worked super fine and the colour is so different from the other reds I’ve had. Everybody has to own this shade for sure!

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

4/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Berry Crush.

3. Why do you like that colour?

The reason for my choice in Berry Crush is the scent!

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

I love the peppermint in the product — it’s super refreshing and something I’ve never felt before in a lipstick. Would totally wear it everyday. Application was easy and pigmentation is definitely buildable. If you’re a fan of matte lippies, this is the one for you. If not, do pack on the lip balm or prep your lips before application — another tip would be putting on a gloss to add a little shine.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

Personally, I feel that the Red Velvet has a little too strong of a cocoa smell. Toning it down a little would be great!

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

For the price point at RM35, I would totally recommend it to my friends. Seeing that it is of similar quality to a high-end branded one 🤭

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

I want to give a rating of 5/5 for this product.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Between the two colours, Berry Crush and Red Velvet, I prefer Berry Crush for myself. It’s my favourite colour, of course💕

3. Why do you like that colour?

Berry Crush is a very smooth colour and I prefer nude lipsticks for myself, for sure💞

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

The best thing about this lipstick, of course, is the colour. It has a watercolour texture that stains my lips instantly. This liquid lipstick is seriously easy to handle. It won't cake or dry my lips and looks seriously bold all day long 💞

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

I think this Kaay Cosmetics can improve by adding more colours 🌈💞

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

At RM35.00, yes, I will recommend this product to other people and of course, to my friends. I love the quality of this lipstick and I know other people will love this product too✨

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

4/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

Red Velvet!

3. Why do you like that colour?

The cool undertone really compliments my skin tone. It gives a slightly vampire-ish look which I love!

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

Texture for sure, it glides on well. Dries quickly and gives a nice matte but not drying finish.

I also quite like the brush.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

As of now I think it’s pretty worth the price point and the amount of product in the tube. Just that its texture is not lightweight.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

If you’re a fan of matte lipstick but have dry/chapped lips, I’d say go for it.

But if you’re not a fan of scented lip products, I’d say this is not for you because Berry Crush leaves a minty/tinglish feeling on the lips which some people won’t like and Red Velvet smells like chocolate!

If you’re up for both, then this product could be worth the try 👍🏻

4/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?RED VELVET.

3. Why do you like that colour?

Because the colour suits my skin tone very very very well and that is saying something, because I never liked wearing red before this.

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

I like the texture and smell of the lipstick.

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

To make a new bottle for the lipstick.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

Yes, I will recommend this to my friends for sure, because even though the price a bit expensive, the lipstick is very nice to wear and it’s super matte!!

1. Overall rating of the product on the Crunch O'Meter (between 1 - 5):

4/5.

2. Between the two colours, which is your favourite?

My favourite has got to be Red Velvet!

3. Why do you like that colour?

From the name of the shade itself and the colour, it just appeals to my style and it gives a great pop of colour to any makeup look. You can’t really go wrong with a good red lip! Plus, I feel this shade of red is versatile and would suit almost everyone.

4. What is the best thing you like about the product?

First thing that appealed to me was THE COLOUR. And when applied, there was a minty feeling on my lips which I personally like 😬

5. What improvements do you think the product needs?

I feel that the sponge applicator isn’t very good. When I first opened the tube, I had to sort of pump in and dig in the applicator into the tube to really get out the product. At first, I thought it wasn’t pigmented but actually it’s just the applicator.

6. At RM35, do you think you will recommend this product to your friends? Why?

As of now, it wouldn’t be the first brand for me to recommend, but if a friend is keen on trying out local cosmetics and Kaay Cosmetics lip product(s), I would say yes! It’s worth the price and it’s pigmented (for both the colours). Support LOKAL!
