Moe money, moe problems? Not entirely sure where your money goes throughout the month? Do you find it tough to resist spending and save up towards your financial goals? Not with HeyAlfred! In the Crunch Spotlight today is HeyAlfred, a mobile app that helps millennials stay on top of their money. If you’re a regular here on Crunch, HeyAlfred may not be a total stranger to you! If you’re new to our platform, read on to find out more about what HeyAlfred stands for. We had the pleasure of hearing from one of the co-founders of the app, Tengku Muhammad Shah, or more affectionately known as ‘Moe’. Moe loves a good cup of Joe and is 21 years old for the 8th time this decade!
1. So, tell us more about HeyAlfred and what makes it tick!
HeyAlfred is a mobile app that helps the millennial generation to stay on top of their money. We go through your spending data to empower you with the financial insights you need to learn more about your spending habits. We aim to equip every millennial with the right information to make better financial decisions. Be it reaching a saving goal, or finding out how they can maximise their money, HeyAlfred is the one-stop app for all things financial!
2. What role do you play in HeyAlfred?
My role is to oversee the team’s progress and cohesion in reaching our shared business goals! As CEO (Chief Everything Officer), I also assist my team members when they face problems while executing their work by helping them break down complex issues into bite-sized, actionable solutions.
3. How does a typical day look like for you in the office?
I am always the first one in the office to turn on the lights and AC! I then take orders for the team’s morning coffee before we start work at 10AM. We start with a morning team briefing (stand-up). This is where team members share their task for the day and also the challenges they faced the day before, thus fostering unity among team members and allowing support to be given where it’s needed!
Periodically throughout the day, I will check in on each team member to see if I can be of assistance to anyone who is facing difficulties. As the CEO, I am also one of the last people to leave the office!
4. What is something that sets you apart from other companies in your industry?
We are turning personal finance on its head. Making savings fund again (wink)! Our business approach is user-centric gamification. There isn’t a mobile app like ours here in Malaysia, and we feel that we have the first-movers advantage. Although every time we pitch the idea to a potential partner or investor, they say they had the exact same idea 10 years ago. It all just boils down to ‘do’ or ‘don't’.
5. Who has influenced you most when it comes to your work ethic?
My father is the most hard-working man I know. He puts in 10-12 hours a day, working tirelessly to get his desired result. He continues to strive to learn even at his golden age! At 67, he has fully digitised his own consulting practise and has mastered the art of virtual conferencing. I hope to have inherited his hunger for knowledge and grit to continue striving for the best!
6. What does a work-life balance mean to you?
As an entrepreneur, I’ve never had a problem with work-life balance, as my work is my life!
7. How do you usually start your day?
I get up at about 6:30AM, sometimes 7AM. After performing my morning prayers, I start the process of making my drip coffee. I love a good cup of coffee in the morning! (Moe loves his Joe) The smell of coffee alone will wake me up.
While waiting for my coffee to brew, I meditate for 10-15 minutes. This allows me to clear my mind and chart out the things I need to accomplish for the day. The next 10-15 minutes are spent going through my emails and writing down the things I need to do for the day as I sip my coffee.
After coffee, I would either go for a 30-minute swim or 30-minute jog. Sometimes it can be a struggle, but every time I look down at my bulging tummy it motivates me to keep going. By 9AM, I am done with my morning exercise and ready to get to work!
8. What does success mean to you personally, and how do you go about achieving this?
I like to focus on short term goals. Micro-successes, in other words. Doing 1 more pushup today than I did yesterday, or even waking up 10 minutes earlier in the morning is a win to me! So, if you think about completing tasks as your daily success goal, you’d achieve 20-30 successes daily.
9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Never be too sure of what you want that you are not open to something better.”
10. How do you stay productive when you are having a bad day?
Every day is a good day. Some days just aren't as great! Having a positive outlook each day helps me to better handle the not-so-great days. I always try to intentionally take a step back and ask myself: “How can I turn this day around?”
11. What skills have been most useful to you in your journey thus far?
Communications skills. The way we communicate with people can either make or break a deal. The tonality, language, and word choice all play a huge part in conveying an idea. A great idea communicated badly is a bad idea.
12. What’s the most important financial advice you want to leave with our readers?
Start learning and reading up on how to make money work for you.
Moe, along with the HeyAlfred team are inspirations to both Malaysians and aspiring entrepreneurs too. It goes to show that if you have a great idea, it all boils down to your decision to ‘do’ or ‘don’t’. The journey won’t be easy, but be like Moe and do your best to adopt a positive outlook each day. Celebrate your little wins and always find something or someone to inspire you and keep you going. If the HeyAlfred team can do it, you surely can, too!
