5 Beauty Tips To Elevate Your Morning Routine

I don’t know about you, but I always find it difficult to wake up in the morning, much less have a mindful routine to help me start the day. Most days I just do the bare minimum: rolling out of bed, brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and eating my breakfast before heading out to work. One thing I’m hoping to change is to be more conscious about my skincare and beauty routine and to be more intentional when I’m getting ready in the morning. After all, the process of waking up in the morning determines our mindset when we take on the day, right?
Here are a few tips to help you get ready in the morning:
1. Plan your outfit ahead of time.
One of the things we ladies take the longest to do in the morning is figuring out what to wear. A tip would be to narrow down and choose 2-3 “must-wear” pieces of clothing and organise them in a section of your wardrobe. On days when you have no clue what to wear, it’ll be easier to put your outfit together.
Plus, if a piece you want to wear needs ironing, you can have it done earlier and not scramble on the day itself!
2. Rise earlier to shine brighter!
I’ve always wanted to be a morning person who enjoys waking up early to get a power workout in, have a proper breakfast, and even have time to journal afterwards before I start my day. One thing I’ve tried to help me with that is to wake up at least 30 minutes earlier to get a kickstart to my day! The early bird gets the worm - but in this case, the early bird gets the full beauty routine!
Waking up earlier gives you more time to properly go through your beauty routine without having to rush out of the house and stress about potentially being late to school or work. It sets you up in the right mindset to seize the day and make the most out of it! Having extra time to go through your routine gives you the space to breathe, to pay more attention to your actions, and to be in the moment. This could even be part of your mindfulness and relaxation routine every day which gives you the strength to shine even brighter than you already do!

3. Don’t forget to hydrate!
My mom has always been a strong advocate for getting the right start to your morning with a large glass of water. “It’s good to start your day with a cup of water when you get out of bed!”, she always says. Water has been mentioned countless times as one of the most important things you need, not only to ensure well-functioning bodily systems (read: for smooth passing of motions) but also to have healthy and beautiful skin!
Your skin is the largest organ of your body. So, if you hydrate your body with a cup of water in the morning, your skin will naturally also be hydrated from the inside out, thus appearing softer and more supple.
4. Simplify your skincare routine with just 3 steps.
These simple steps would be, 1) to cleanse, 2) to moisturise, and 3) to protect! You can do this with a gentle cleanser, hydrating moisturiser, and protective sunscreen.
With just 3 simple products and steps, you’ll find that you’ll be more eager to get ready in the morning:
Skincare Step 1: Cleanse with a gentle cleanser
Think about it: You’ve been rolling around in bed for at least 8 hours every night, and only changing your bedsheets about once a week. Imagine the amount of dirt, dead skin, and germs accumulating on your skin as you sleep! Cleansing your face in the morning gives you a clean slate before you apply anything else on your face. Pick a gentle cleanser that is suitable for your skin type (check out our series, Your Skin Unfiltered to learn more about skincare!), as a gentle cleanser will ensure that your skin isn’t stripped of its natural moisturising factors and left feeling tight or dry.
I would personally recommend the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, as it is known to be one of the gentler cleansers on the market.
Skincare Step 2: Use a hydrating moisturiser
Remember what I mentioned about staying hydrated from the inside out? We mustn’t forget to hydrate our skin on the outside too! Moisturizing your face should come as a no-brainer after cleansing your skin, as you will need to replenish and retain moisture on your skin. A fuss-free moisturiser like the Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream would be suitable for pretty much any skin type -- it’s non-comedogenic and fragrance-free too!
P/S: If your skin requires more hydration, you can opt to use this hydrating skin toner by Bio-Essence too in between your cleanser and moisturiser.
Skincare Step 3: Protect your skin with sunscreen
Despite most of us being indoors these days due to the recent CMCO restrictions, it is still super important for us to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. We are still exposed to sunlight through our windows, especially if your workspace is right in front of one! UVA and UVB rays are harmful to your skin if you are exposed for an extended time without any protection for your skin. Sunscreen also slows down your skins’ photo-ageing process, so it’s best to protect your skin no matter what.
Here’s an affordable option for you to try: Daily Sun Face Cream by Guardian sunscreen would be ideal as it has a protection coverage of SPF 50+ with Vitamin B and E!
5. Use multi-functional make-up items.
I know, I know. “We’ll be indoors most of the time! What’s the point of putting on make-up?” Even though I mostly agree with your sentiments, putting on make-up can be very motivating in the morning. It makes you feel like you’re ready to take on the day even though you’re just working or studying indoors! Not only that, putting on some simple make-up in the morning will help us to look more presentable, especially when we are attending online meetings or classes!
A cream blush is one of the more versatile make-up products, as you can double it as a light, tint of colour on your lips and as an eyeshadow while bringing some colour to your cheeks. Cream blushes are also known to be formulated as hydrating compared to dry powder blushes -- that dewy and natural flush is a look many girls would give anything for.
