8 Safest Countries for Solo Female Travelers
Updated: Jan 28, 2019
While the world certainly isn't as scary as we think, it wouldn't harm to err on the side of caution. As women, we have to take extra precautions, especially when it comes to travelling abroad.
With the end of the year and its much awaited holidays coming up, now is the time just about everyone's thinking about their next holiday destination. For solo female travelers, this is a decision that they think about more thoroughly than the rest. To ease your travel worries, I've gone ahead and compiled a list of countries for your reference.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Known as The Rose of the North, Chiang Mai is the most historically and culturally significant Northern city of Thailand. It is home to over 300 temples in the city, some of which are as old as the city itself--one of the most important is the Doi Suthep Temple, which is perched atop the picturesque Doi Suthep mountain. Activities such as trekking, rafting, white water rafting, rock climbing and exploring hill tribes are also available, and if you're into shopping, Chiang Mai is also famous for silver, silk products and handicrafts. If you're looking for a culture trip that gives a bang for your buck, then Chiang Mai is your best bet.
Despite being a literal dot on the map, our tiny neighbour Singapore has a lot to offer. The Lion City is not only one of the safest and cleanest cities in the world, it is also a wonderful blend of greenery and skyscrapers. Spectacular rides at Marina Bay, shopping and food at Chinatown and Little India, Singapore Night Safari, the Botanic Gardens and Sentosa Island are simply calling for you to visit!
No list of safe countries is complete without this East Asian nation on it. Famously known as one of the safest countries in the world, Japan is not only a place where you can walk just about anywhere on your own during any time of day without worry, it is also a place that is incredibly rich in culture and history. So much so that it is one of the best and freakishly preserved Asian countries. Gorgeous sceneries, delicious food, gracious citizens, skyscrapers, advanced technology elegantly meeting age-old tradition--what more can you ask for?
The Netherlands is a safe, relaxed and easy to navigate place to head to for solo female travelers. The same can be said for its city of Amsterdam, which is not only popular, but was also ranked as the 6th safest city in 2017. It is also a great place to cycle in, so if you'd like to take a scenic cycle through the city, you can always hire a bike for a leisurely ride. Amsterdam also boasts lots of fun, quirky shops and beautiful architecture. Perfect for taking lots of Instagram shots!
Looking for a gorgeous country to either backpack or have a luxurious stay in? Then New Zealand is a pretty good bet for solo female travelers. Its scenery (as we've all seen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy ehehe) is mind-blowing, the people are friendly and there is a near endless list of activities that you can partake in. Sign yourself up for a tour, and you'd be able to enjoy the sights of New Zealand with greater detail, and the drivers will also keep an eye on you to make sure you and the rest of the tour group are safe.
Here is yet another country that consistently tops the Global Peace Index, making it the ideal travel destination for solo female travelers. Especially if you have extra cash to spare, because Iceland does not come cheap. That aside, Iceland is a nature lover's dream because it has beautiful glaciers and lakes, thanks to it being a hive of geothermal and volcanic activity. Things that you can do in Iceland include and aren't limited to soaking in the hotsprings, catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights (of course) and walking through the ice tunnels of one of the country’s largest glaciers, Langjökull.
While it is on the more expensive side of things, Switzerland is definitely more than worth a mention as it is one of the top ten most peaceful countries in the world. The latter of which is thanks to its political stability and neutrality in global conflicts. So for those who chocolate, skiing and breathtaking scenery (and of course, have lots of extra money to spend), then you are in luck. Switzerland should be on your list of go-to luxury destinations. Be sure to pack your camera too! A photograph with the Matterhorn aka the most photographed mountain in the world is not to be missed.
Ah, Australia. A backpacker favourite that is home to a plethora of flora and fauna that are just waiting to kill you. It is ironic that it has made it to our list of safe holiday destinations, but here it is. While its plants and animals may not be the most hospitable, the country itself has a lot to offer. Vast as it is, there is always something new to discover in Australia, be it sandy beaches, flashy cities like Brisbane or Sydney, rainforests or empty deserts, you'll never be bored in this country. As an added plus, Australia also has plenty of sociable hostels with female-only dorms and floors. Perfect for solo female travelers who aren't comfortable with sharing mixed dorms.
