by Sivani Rajendra. |
You can never have enough ways to make house cleaning more efficient! Cleaning our homes is surely one difficult task, but by applying these simple and quick cleaning hacks to tidy up our home; we can have a spick and span house in no time.
1. Deodorise your chopping board by using a lemon.
For me, the cleanliness of utensils and cutlery is crucial, especially when I am trying to provide my family with healthy and clean meals. You do not need to use any expensive or complicating cleaning agents to deodorise your chopping boards at home, this job can be performed simply by using half a lemon with some salt.
I usually purchase extra lemons during my grocery runs because they always come in handy for me. Lemons contain a high level of acidity which is proven to kill harmful germs and bacteria. All you need to do is take a lemon and cut it in half, then use the half lemon with the fleshy surface faced downwards and gently rub your chopping board for about 2 to 3 minutes.
I also use them on my chopping board to get rid of the odour caused by raw ingredients, especially the meats.
2. Using Coca-Cola to wash your toilet.
This is quite a commonly known trick and it sounds gimmicky but many have found this to work, like myself! The acidity found in Coke makes it super handy for cleaning purposes. Personally, for me, I would resort to using Coke if the result of using bathroom cleaners to remove stubborn stains around my toilet bowl is not as desirable.
I'd occasionally use a can of Coca-Cola (1 can should be just nice to do the trick) and coat my entire toilet bowl in coke for 2 hours. Then I pour in lukewarm water and gently use a brush to scrub the bowl (you do not need to use too much force, the coke has already done most of the job). I can assure you that you’ll have a sparkling toilet bowl in no time!
3. Use water and dishwashing liquid to clean your microwave.
In my house, I'm known to be a total "Miss OCD" when it comes to cleanliness because I am very particular with everything. Especially the microwave where I use to reheat my leftovers. For me, cleaning the microwave is one of the difficult tasks because microwaves are very delicate and fragile. If we're not careful while cleaning, it may result in a not-functioning or faulty microwave.
Here's what I do: I fill up a microwave-safe dish containing dishwashing liquid and water into my microwave. Then, I'd set a timer for about 1-minute with the substance in the microwave. Once that is done, I take a semi-dry sponge and wipe the whole inside of the microwave gently and thoroughly. By doing this I will have a spick and span microwave in no time!
4. Clean your Venetian blinds with a tong.
Venetian blinds may look easier to maintain compared to curtains but trust me it is much more difficult than how it seems to be. Cleaning the blinds is quite challenging for me especially when I need to rush to some other place at the same time. As we all know blinds collect dust if it is left unclean for a long time.

What trick do I use to do my blinds? I use a pair of tongs, four rubber bands and two microfiber dust cloths. First, wrap the cloth around each tong using the rubber band, then grab an individual blind with the tongs, swipe, and repeat for each blind. By practising this hack you will have your blinds clean in no time!
5. Clean stained carpets with vinegar.
I love to decorate my house with those fury and soft carpets; but what I find difficult about it is that once it is stained it is not easy to have it clean and stain-free again. When I try using bleach or any other kind of strong cleaning substance, the colour of my carpets fades instead of the stain getting cleaned.
This hack is a suggestion from a friend of mine and I decided to try it after; it works within 2 to 3 minutes after applying. What is surprising is that a small amount of vinegar can do such a wonder by getting rid of such stains. You may just rub a small portion of vinegar on the stained area and let it sit for about 2 to 3 minutes then wipe it off with a piece of clean and slightly damp cloth (to prevent the strong vinegar smell from permeating the air).

6. Use baking soda to remove bad odour from your refrigerator.
In my house, my most loved kitchen appliance is the refrigerator; but when I store my fridge with various types of food, the odour would definitely linger around in my refrigerator. This simple and easy hack to clean my refrigerator was taught by my dad.
Here is what we need to do: wipe down all fixed parts with a cloth dampened with soapy water and a drop of vinegar. Dry all surfaces thoroughly and place everything back in the fridge. Leave an open container of baking soda (1 small container is just nice) in the fridge to absorb the refrigerator smell for at least 24 hours.
Then, throw away all the baking soda (trust me you do not want to use it in your cooking) once it has 'completed' its job. As a result, your refrigerator will not only look spanking clean, it will also smell brand new. I do this trick once a month because I do not want to waste my baking soda so often and I saw the results in my very first use.
