5 Practical Gifts You Can Give To Your Colleagues To Show Your Appreciation

Updated: Aug 14

Gifts, you can love them or hate them, but we all get them.

I love giving gifts, especially handmade ones, or if I were to purchase something from the store, I’d make sure I customized it and add my touch so that the gift is more personal to the receiver.

To be honest, it is easy to get or make gifts for people that you are close with, like family members, close friends, spouses, etc. These are people whom you have spent most of your time with and built the relationship together so you know them and they know you. You would know what they want, what they need, what they appreciate, and what they hate about gifts.

On the other hand, we have another group of people whom we spend most of our time with too; our dear colleagues and/or clients. We know them but not exactly, we understand them but not too deep; you get what I mean right?

So, if you want to get a gift to appreciate that colleague who always lends an ear to your rants or that client who was not too fussy and truly appreciated your hard work, here are 5 selections for you to ponder on and positively get.

1. Notebook or Planner

You can never go wrong with a notebook or planner. When you are buying either one, ensure that the front cover reflects the receiver.

Some would like fancy like shiny and glittery, some like plain and simple, some are fond of quotes or sassy catchphrases, some would love emojis or pictures. Find out what your receiver likes or resembles and go along that line.

Other than Lazada, Shopee, Popular, MPH, and other bookstores, here are some places you can visit too: Typo, Pebble Paper Design, Mossery and BNottee. Prices will vary so you can find something within your budget.

2. Stationeries

The pens, the pencils, the coloured pens and markers, the highlighters, stack of sticky notes, sticky notes with various shapes, the 0.5mm, the 2mm, the fine tip!

If a colleague or client appeared in your head as you read these, then you know what to get for them. It might take some time for this gift because you need to know what they use, their preferred brands and the purpose, say for doodling, bullet journaling, sketching, and such.

Sometimes your colleague or client might mention what they like or planning to get, and you can write it down to check later. Worse comes to worst, just casually ask them about their favourite stationeries and gift them. This type of gift can be found in any stationery shop or the same places as the notebooks and planners.

P/S: If your colleagues are teachers, red and black pens are the unsurpassed gifts.

3. Self-Care Book

Self-care is vital for everyone and to gift a book on that to someone certainly shows you care about them. This genre of books applies to anyone; regardless of whether or not they are a reader, because it explores everything about themselves. For avid readers, you can consider getting thick ones with deep thoughts; while for the halfhearted readers, you can get them a thinner one or the interactive type.

Some of my favourite self-care books are Love for Imperfect Things : How to Accept Yourself in a World Striving for Perfection by Haemin Sunim, Start Where You Are : A Journal for Self-Exploration by Meera Lee Patel, Note to Self by Connor Franta and The Little Book of Positivity by Lucy Lane.

Of course, there are a lot more options so just browse through bookstore websites and I am sure you’ll find something for them (and maybe even yourself too!).

4. Cash Voucher or Gift Card

One of the best gifts I have received was from my ex-employer; it was an RM200 voucher to shop in Popular Bookstore; as a bookworm myself, I was ecstatic!

This is an easy gift to get because all you need to know is your colleague or client’s main interest, just as how I was known to be a bookworm. Nonetheless, my ex-employer just had to reconfirm before finalizing. She asked me which would make me happier; a Uniqlo voucher, a Popular voucher, or an Aeon voucher.

It is that easy! You see your receiver fancying Starbucks, then get a Starbucks gift card. If you are truly clueless, just randomly ask them to choose, say between Sephora and IKEA, then you will get your answer.

5. Care Package or Food Chest

This is one of my favourite ways of gifting that is time-consuming but worth it!

This would depend on your creativity to pick the contents of the package; either entirely food (hence the name food chest) or a mixture of food, essential items, mystery items, etc. You can say it is like a hamper but better because it’s customized for the receiver, it is more affordable since you can tweak it according to your budget, and every single item is something that the receiver will like and appreciate.

Alternatively, you can order them gift curating sites, for example from Wishful, Giftr or Happy Bunch, but the delight of assembling your package for them would just hits differently not only for the receiver but for you!

There is always the easy way of gifting generic items to your colleagues or clients but if you wish to show that you genuinely appreciate them, these selections of gifts would be perfect in conveying that message. Happy gifting!
