4 Reasons Why You Should Consider Juicing

As we grow older, our body needs more nutrients than we think. According to researchers, the average amount of fruits and vegetables we should take are approximately 1-1/2 to 2 cups of fruit, and between 2 to 2-1/2 cups of vegetables a day. With the limited amount of time in our day, eating 2 cups of fruits and vegetables may seem like a lot especially if you’re the kind that finds it difficult to eat vegetables. So, what better way to put in all the good nutrients in our body with only one glass? Juicing! Here are four reasons why you should make juicing as a part of your lifestyle.

1. Enjoy an energy boost

Aside from getting a good night’s sleep and coffee, juicing can give you the energy boost you need. Juicing makes it easier for your body to absorb all the nutrients hence it will immediately give you more energy to go about your day. When I first started juicing, my main focus was to get a clearer skin. I didn’t know that I would be getting another amazing benefit as well. To my delight, I still feel energetic even though it has passed 5 p.m. Having that extra energy has made me more efficient and helped me to think more clearly. Being lethargic is no fun, so juicing has definitely helped me in synchronizing my energy to my daily schedule.

2. A good way to get vitamins and minerals

According to Debra J. Loder, RD, program director at Remuda Ranch, “Juicing may be a good way for individuals who do not consume enough fruits and vegetables to get important vitamins and minerals by creating tasty concoctions of fruit and vegetable juice.” So, if you find it hard to eat your vegetables or if you’re constantly in a rush, juicing is a convenient way in ensuring your body gets the vitamins it needs. To make it more nutritionally balanced, you can add ingredients that have protein and healthy fats such as Greek yogurt, almond milk, peanut butter, and etc. These ingredients will help in sustaining energy and make you feel fuller.

3. Strengthen your immune system

We all get sick from time to time and as much as Panadol works, building your immune system is the key of lessening your chance of getting sick. With all sorts of greens and fruits we get in one glass, juicing will definitely help our body in building its own immune system. Our immune system is located in our digestive tract, hence taking care of our gut is the key to keeping our body healthy. Giving our body more vegetables especially cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, and radish will help in improving your gut system hence your immune system.

4. Improve your digestive system

Hippocrates once said, “All disease begins in the gut” and he was right. According to an article written by Elissa Goodman, “Nothing in your body can function correctly if your digestive system and gut are not functioning properly.” Hence, it is vital for us to take extra care of it. Aside from chewing your food properly and taking probiotics, another thing you can do to take care of your digestive system is juicing. When I first started juicing, aside from having more energy, I also noticed that my digestive system functions better and I no longer feel constipated. Normal green juice works fine but if you are feeling more adventurous, you can try making celery juice and yes, it is a juice made from only celery - don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Overall, juicing has a lot of benefits but the key here is to always find a balance. Though juicing can help you in losing weight, experts have made it clear that it should never be used to replace a meal. You must also keep in mind that juicing is another method to prevent us from getting sick and not to cure our sickness. Speaking from personal experience, when my mother was first diagnosed with cancer and was trying out the alternative method, she was immediately put on a juice cleanse for months only to find out later that in order to fight the battle, her body needs energy and to get energy, she would have to put some protein in her body. So, just like how our body needs vitamins, we must remember that our body needs other nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates as well to function properly. Balance is definitely key.

Green Juice Recipe:

2 cups baby spinach

2 cups kale or romaine

1 green apple

1 red apple

A little lemongrass (optional)

Immune Boosting Recipe:

1 ruby grapefruit

1 orange

2 carrots

1/2 inch (1 cm) piece of ginger
