15 Facts You Need to Know About Fantastic Beasts

It has been over a week since the release of "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" and Harry Potter vibes are still strong in the air.

To further fuel your adoration for this highly addictive magical world of JK Rowling's, here are 15 facts about the Fantastic Beasts universe:

  1. Newt's first name isn't Newt: His real name is actually Newton Artemis Fido Scamander, which clearly draws from Greek mythology. It's also interesting to note that his name has a lot to do with animals; a newt is a salamander, Artemis is the Greek goddess of wild animals, Fido is a common name for pet dogs, and Scamander sounds like salamander.

  2. Newt's mother bred Hippogriffs: Having been raised around such majestic creatures since he was young, it is clear where Newt's love for fantastic beasts came from. Funnily enough, his mother did not approve of his career choice despite her own profession.

  3. Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5 release dates are out: Fantastic Beasts 3 is set to be released on 20th November 2020. The specific dates for 4 and 5 aren't out yet, but they will be out on 2022 and 2024 respectively.

  4. Another Harry Potter character is making an appearance: Aside from Dumbledore, Nagini, Voldemort's Horcrux snake is set to appear. The role will be played by Claudia Kim.

  5. Newt Scamander actually appeared in the Harry Potter films: In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", Newt's name showed up on the Marauder's Map. The reason as to why, however, isn't clear but many theories exist.

  6. Nicolas Flamel finally appears in Fantastic Beasts 2: While the famed immortal alchemist was referenced frequently in the Harry Potter verse, it isn't until Fantastic Beasts 2 that we get to see him.

  7. The stars designed their own wands: Unlike the world of Harry Potter, the stars of Fantastic Beasts worked closely with designers to design wands that suit their characters.

  8. We get to see baby Nifflers in Fantastic Beasts 2: Remember those adorable platypus-like creatures in Fantastic Beasts 1? Now you get to see them in fun-sized packages! Talk about cute.

  9. Newt's grandson married Luna Lovegood: This might be old news for die-hard Harry Potter fans (you know, the kind who scour the internet for a million and one Harry Potter facts), but for those who aren't, Luna Lovegood married Rolf Scamander. A perfect match, considering her fondness for bizarre creatures.

  10. Newt was expelled from Hogwarts: The reason for this was due to an experiment of Leta Lestrange's, which he unfortunately took the blame for.

  11. Newt worked with dragons during the war: Not everyone can work with dragons, but given Newt's gift with beasts, it is no surprise that he can. Specifically, Newt worked with Ukranian Ironbellies, reputed to be the largest dragons in the world, at the Ministry of Magic.

  12. First main Muggle character: Think about it. All of the main characters in the Harry Potter world are witches and wizards. Jacob Kowalski of Fantastic Beasts is the first main Muggle character in this beloved magical world.

  13. Historic roots: Many of the American laws surrounding magic are influenced by the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s in American history.

  14. Redmayne's favourite creature is the Bowtruckle: So much so that he wore a fan-made Bowtruckle in his breast pocket at the movie premiere.

  15. Five films: Fantastic Beasts was originally slated to be a trilogy, but Warner Bros has since confirmed that there will be five films instead. To make things even better, JK Rowling will be writing the screenplays for all of them. Excellent news for Harry Potter fans, I'd have to say!
