10 Travel Apps to Make the Best out of Your Upcoming Holiday

Updated: Jan 28, 2019

It's that time of year again. Travelling season is upon us, what with the number of school and public holidays coming right up. After all, what other time of year could be more perfect for spending time with your friends and family than the end of the year?

That said, planning a holiday trip isn't the easiest thing. There is a lot of research and bargain searching to be had- without these, you are just about guaranteed a failed holiday. Thankfully enough, with the advancement of technology, holiday planning has gotten a heck of a lot easier.

These days, our favourite holiday assistant planner to turn to are apps.

Skyscanner

Skyscanner is the must-have app for travellers everywhere. This travel app lets you search for discount prices for flights, car rentals, and hotels. And to make things even better, you can even select "Everywhere" as you destination, and lo and behold, Skyscanner would offer an array of cheap flights all over the globe for your choosing. So if you're feeling a little adventurous? Give this feature a try. You might just come across a gem you hadn't even thought of going to.

TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor is the go-to app for just about everything to do with travel. This is especially true when it comes to travel planning, because the app offers a wide array of recommendations for places to see, restaurants, activities, hotels, and tours, just to name a few. And to make your travel planning experience even easier, TripAdvisor also has a search built-in where you can search for flights to the destination of your desire.

Klook

Want to enrich your holiday experience? Then consider having Klook as your holiday companion. Use Klook as your guide to the world's most exciting adventures and experiences. These activities can range from a sightseeing tour in Bali, skipping the lines at Universal Studios Japan or a bus ride through Hong Kong. You can also book tickets at hard-to-beat prices that you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere.

Airbnb

Once upon a time, you could only rent rooms with Airbnb. Fast forward to the present, and you can now do so much more on this travel must-have app. Along with booking rooms, you can also sign yourself up for "Airbnb Experiences" which is led by experts and local hosts. These can be anything from mountain bike riding to painting classes at an art centre. In some cities, the app also allows you to make reservations at restaurants.

XE Currency

While it isn't exactly the prettiest app around, XE Currency does the job. So whenever you are in need of a quick currency conversion check (you know, to keep track of how much you're spending), all you have to do is whip this baby out. Best of all, not only does XE Currency do a pretty decent job of keeping itself fairly updated, this app works offline as well. No need to worry about Wi-Fi or mobile data with this one!

Grabean

Instead of just spending money while you're on holiday, why not make some money instead? Be a personal shopper by signing up for Grabean! Grabean is a nifty app that connects travellers with shoppers on a single platform. With just a few taps, users can get the items of their desire from overseas without having to pay for international shipping, and travellers can earn some tip money from their trips. Whoever thought of this app is a genius, because who can't relate to wanting buy something overseas, only to be blocked by exorbitant shipping prices?

Hotel Tonight

Who doesn't have the fear of a hotel reservation somehow getting cancelled? If you, for whatever reason, do not have a hotel reservation and need to have a place to stay now, then Hotel Tonight is the app for you. Hotel Tonight is an app that specializes in selling off same-day hotel rooms, often at steep discounts. You can also make bookings in advance on this app, but of course, the best deals are now.

Google Flights

It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. Despite all of the great travel search apps that are available these days, Google Flights is another one that is worthy of adding to your repertoire. Use it when you'd like to make a quick check on airfare prices for your destination(s) of interest. It's also good for exploring travel choices based on price.

Packpoint

Even the most seasoned traveller could do with a reminder or two. Now, we've all seen dozens upon dozens of list-making apps; they're not exactly the most groundbreaking discoveries to be made at the app store. However, what sets Packpoint apart from the rest is that it automatically generates a weather-specific packing list after you input your travel destination and dates. The app will ask you what you plan on doing during your trip and will make suggestions accordingly.

Uber

We all know this app--R.I.P, Uber. You're sorely missed--and while it is no longer active in Malaysia, that doesn't mean it isn't overseas. Walking on foot isn't always an option when you're abroad, so when you're in need of a ride, don't forget to have this ride-hailing app handy in your smartphone. You'll thank yourself later.
