10 Outfit Basics That You Can Survive On For The Rest Of The Year
Updated: Oct 8, 2019
One thing I’ve learned over the years about fashion is that basic pieces are the ultimate fashion items worth splurging on, besides purses and jewellery. Additionally, there’s really nobody who can flaunt basic outfits in an elegant yet laid back manner better than the French. An ensemble that could be as simple as a striped shirt paired along with a pair of jeans or black slacks and then top it off with a pair of white tennis shoes, it’s perfect for an errand day or even attending a meeting.
Regardless, here are 10 outfit basics that you can survive on for the rest of the year without anybody realising you’re actually wearing the same garment repeatedly:
1. White crew-neck tee

This is a staple even in the most minimalistic closet. A white crew-neck tee can be paired up or down depending on how you accessorise it and what you decide to match it with at the bottom. For instance, pair it denim jeans for a more relaxed fit whereas clean-cut ankle-length trousers for a rather chic look.
2. Mid blue high-waist straight ankle jeans

Denim jeans of this silhouette are the new “skinny jeans” that we used to love and wear religiously. They serve a relatively mature and very editor-inspired look if you will.
3. Striped boatneck

Bonjour! A very French thing to wear is definitely a top with horizontal stripes all across the shirt. The boatneck style of shirt with stripes are timeless and classy. You can easily pair it with a midi skirt for a date night out or a pair of jeans for a brunch day out. Pretty effortless, yes?
4. Black Cigarette Trousers

Cigarette trousers are not only office-appropriate (if your workplace has a strict dress code) but also very fashion-esque. Besides plain black colour, Houndstooth prints are the latest IT pattern that appears to be as safe and subtle as black.
5. Black leather skirt

Leather jackets, leather pants, or leather skirts may seem pretty minimal and simple yet it’s distinctive texture makes it such a statement piece to an outfit.
6. A Denim Jacket

Oh good old denim jacket that never runs out of style. Putting on a denim jacket helps elevate any basic outfit like a simple little black dress. It adds the “I’m-ready-to-have-fun” character onto your seemingly boring basic outfit.
7. White button-up shirt

Aside from plain white t-shirt, another wardrobe staple is a white button-up shirt. Depending on your personal style, there are a variety of white button-up shirts made of different materials like linen, silk, and chiffon, just to name a few. You’ll definitely have a lot of wear out of this!
8. High-waisted denim shorts
Everyone needs at least a pair of these for the summer holidays or even just a quick run to the “mamak”. My personal favourite is a clean-cut pair of denim shorts, not ripped or frayed, as it’s rather modest for everyday wear.
9. Straight neck black tank top

Straightneck black tank tops, or any colour really, are another basics must-have! Why straight neck in particular? Straightneck gives a classy, model-off-duty look which is one of the hottest trends this year.
10. White sneakers

Finally, invest in a pair of good white sneakers or tennis shoes. Yes, they’re overrated, but only for good reasons. Just think about the number of outfits you can complete it with—they’re endless!
Some of these pieces could be already in your wardrobe and you wouldn't even need to get new ones. It's all about realising what we already have that we wouldn't always have the need and urge to go for shopping. It's all about mixing and matching the right basics together to have a put-together look and yet not having the need to spend too much on.
